About Northern Michigan University

Northern Michigan University, or NMU for short, is a public university in Marquette, which is the county seat of Marquette County, situated in the US state of Michigan, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 20 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the most populated city of the Upper Peninsula.


NMU was established in 1889, as Northern State Normal School, by the Michigan Legislature, to educate teachers and the sparsely populated Upper Peninsula. Over the years, the institution grew and expanded its mission, fact which reflected upon its name, the university being renamed several times over the years, to better reflect its mission: Northern State Normal, 1899, Northern State Teachers College, 1927, Northern Michigan College of Education, 1942, and Northern Michigan College, 1955.


The university currently offers its students 180 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, through 5 academic divisions, which are: the College of Arts and Sciences, Walker L. Cisler College of Business, named for philanthropist Walker Lee Cisler, the College of Graduate Studies, the College of Professional Studies, which contains the School of Education, School of Nursing, School of Technology and Applied Sciences, and School of Art and Design.


Athletics

Northern Michigan's athletic teams are known as the Wildcats, who compete in the NCAA's Division II Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, cross country, skiing, soccer and volleyball. Every year, a football game between NMU and Michigan Technological University is held, the winner being awarded with the Miner's Cup.


The distinctive colors of the Wildcats are forest green and old gold, and their mascot is Wildcat Willy.

Among the most noteworthy alumni from NMU, there are: Lloyd Carr - former Head football coach, University of Michigan, Howard Schultz - CEO and Chairman of Starbucks, Shani Davis - Olympic speed-skater Jason Cameron - actor and personal trainer, John Lautner - internationally famous modern architect, and John D. Holum - Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency and Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security under Bill Clinton, among few others.
